How do you safely anchor a swing or play equipment in the garden?

How do you safely anchor a swing or play equipment in the garden?

A swing or play equipment in the garden gets children moving in all kinds of ways. They swing, climb, slide, tumble and run around it. That is exactly why a firm setup matters. With the right spot, good anchoring and regular checks, the equipment stays properly in place during play.

In this blog, you can read what to look out for when anchoring a swing or play equipment. Handy when you are setting up new equipment, but also when you want to check your existing play area again.

Why do you need to anchor a swing or play equipment?

During play, force is placed on a swing or play equipment. Think of swinging back and forth, pushing off, hanging from rings or climbing on a frame. Anchoring helps absorb that movement and keeps the equipment firmly on the ground.

That is why many EXIT Toys swings and play equipment are installed with ground anchors. We recommend placing these in the ground and setting them in cement or quick concrete for the best stability. You can find exactly how much material you need in the product manual or in the webshop, under the product’s ‘Specifications’ tab.

Choose the right spot first

Good anchoring starts with a good spot. Do not just place play equipment wherever there is space left. Look at the whole play zone. Children do not only move on the equipment, but also around it.

Keep these points in mind:

- Choose a level surface

- Keep enough free space around the equipment, usually around 6.6 ft is recommended

- Do not place the equipment too close to walls, fences, trees, planters or garden furniture

- Make sure the swing can move freely

- Think about visibility from the house or patio

For many types of play equipment, a soft surface is more comfortable than a hard one. Grass or another suitable play surface, for example. Always check the manual for your equipment for the installation instructions.

Follow the manual step by step

Every swing and every piece of play equipment has its own setup. The position of the ground anchors, the way they are fixed and the order of assembly can vary by model. So always use the manual that comes with the product.

Lay out all the parts before you start assembling. Also check that you have the right materials at home for anchoring. With EXIT Toys equipment, ground anchors are included, while cement or quick concrete may be needed separately.

How to anchor play equipment firmly

The exact steps differ per product, but in general you will usually work like this:

- Place the equipment in the right spot according to the manual

- Check whether the frame is level

- Mark where the ground anchors need to go

- Place the ground anchors as indicated

- Secure the anchors according to the product instructions

- Check that all fastenings are firmly tightened

- Carefully test whether the equipment is stable and level

Take your time with this. Play equipment does not need to be set up quickly. Most of all, it needs to be set up properly. Do not forget to let the cement or quick concrete harden fully before children start playing. Do not use the equipment yet if there is visible play in the posts, frame, swing hooks or connections.

Assemble with more than one adult

A swing or play equipment often has large and heavy parts. It is therefore sensible to assemble it with more than one adult. This makes it easier to hold parts securely, position the frame straight and carry out the anchoring more accurately.

Work step by step and do not skip any parts. Unsure during assembly? Stop for a moment and check the manual again before you continue.

Check the anchoring after installation

Is the equipment assembled? Then it is time for one final check before children start playing. Do not only check whether everything is fixed in place, but also whether the equipment is straight and stable.

Check:

- Whether all ground anchors are firmly in the ground

- Whether the anchors are properly attached to the equipment

- Whether posts and frames are straight

- Whether all screws, bolts and nuts are tightened

- Whether there are no visible damaged parts

- Whether the play zone is free from obstacles

Keep checking regularly

Play equipment stands outside in all kinds of weather. Connections can also loosen a little over time through play. So make it a habit to check the equipment regularly.

A good moment is the start of the play season. Check the anchoring then and see whether accessories are still properly attached. Inspect screws, bolts and nuts regularly and tighten them, especially at the start of each play season.

Pay extra attention after strong winds, heavy rain or intensive use. Do you see damage, or is the equipment no longer standing firmly? Then do not let children play on it until the problem has been solved.

Do you want to move the equipment? Setting it up again means anchoring it again according to the manual.

Safe outdoor play starts with a firm foundation

With a well-anchored swing or piece of play equipment, you give children space to move freely without the equipment shifting or wobbling. So choose the right spot carefully, follow the manual step by step and check the anchoring regularly. This keeps the play area sturdy, clear and ready for lots of outdoor play.
